Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition

Returning from their stint in Street Fighter III, Yun and Yang get an HD upgrade, though not to the full extent that they could have. Yun easily has the best screen movement, with a flurry of swift punches and spinning shoulder charges (which will also help avoid missles in a pinch). Yang is just as speedy, bolstering an invulnerable dash and a forward roll that transition into a rising kick. Both character’s attacks seem slightly underpowered, yet don’t let that fool you: their ability to string together combos will make them as fearsome opponents – as any top-tier character (as long as someone knows how to tap into it).

Though the character that stole the show is Oni, who enters the stage looking like a beefed up Dragonball Z character (hair and all). Oni really has the whole package; a spinning hurricane kick that rivals Ken’s, two types of fireballs that will either hit multiple times or charge up for distance, and that’s not even scratching the surface. In the air, Oni is almost untouchable as he is deadly. Sporting a ground smash special that stuns his opponent, his ability to dash midair, and use the Raging Demon mid-air (though hitting only opponents in air), Oni is versatile.

In fact, when it’s all broken down on paper Oni may be the most original of the character sets to come out of the additional Super Street Fighter IV Arcade content. That’s not exactly a bad thing, but it will potentially cause an issue when playing online or with friends, where Oni’s will pop up like weeds everywhere – until further balancing has gone through.

The Lord of the Rings: War in the North

The Lord of the Rings: War in the North joins the long list of action RPGs that made their appearance at E3 2011. On the show floor was a 3 player co-op of the game where all the characters in the squad were pre-chosen. There was a human ranger, an Elven mage, and a Dwarven warrior.

The interesting thing about these classes is that they are not bound to their roles. That is to say, the Elf mage does not have to only use magic. She is also able to attack with a sword. When a character levels up, the player can distribute points into their skill trees. In the demo, there were three different skill trees which the player could distribute their character’s experience points. Through these skill trees the player can specialize their character.

For instance, the Elf mage can choose to become a support or battle mage. However from what I have noticed in the hands-on demo, the player is not bound to a certain skill tree after they have chosen their character’s specialization. Granted the player has enough experience points to distribute, they can create an all-round character.

Dirt 3

The main mode sees players earn reputation points in various events to gain the interest of sponsors who provide them with new vehicles. Flashbacks return from Dirt 2, which can be used up to five times in any difficulty, but cost reputation points to use.

A new gymkhana mode puts players in obstacle courses, challenging them to perform various tricks to earn points. Featured in the game are various party modes, involving events such as smashing wooden targets, spreading a zombie infection, and capture the flag.

Other new features include a Hardcore mode which limits players to the cockpit view with no assists, the appearance of rain and snow, and the ability to upload replay clips directly to YouTube.

Black Mirror II

Black Mirror II takes place in the 1990's, twelve years after the first episode. Solitary Darren, hero of Black Mirror II, meets cute Angelina while he is working at the local photo shop of Biddeford, a small town in New England.

Angelina immediately understands to catch the eye of Darren's despotic, unpopular boss. To add the mystery, there seems to be a third person interested in Angelina. He decides to investigate these incidents. His researches will soon lead him to several locations, such as the small English village of Willow Creek, that adventure game players know from part 1.

Dungeons & Dragons: Daggerdale

Daggerdale is actually the first videogame to use the 4th edition rule set, which has often been criticized or embraced partly for its more video game feel. So if you are looking for a replacement for pens, paper, dice, Cheetos, Mountain Dew and a DM, well you actually probably need to keep looking. Daggerdale leaves most of the roleplaying at the door and is pretty firmly in the hack and slash and loot category.

The Dungeons & Dragons rule set has then only loosely been applied over it all. Powers, stats, race, classes and feats are all there, but it's all been boiled down, and not in the refining the goodness kind of way. Classes and races come in four predetermined combos (human fighter, dwarven cleric, halfing wizard and elven rogue).

You are given stats and can upgrade them at certain levels, but they are set allocations from the start and there is no apparent benefit to not simply upgrading constitution and the stat most closely associated with your class. Feats make an appearance, but they also feel restrictive. Only a handful do something more than +1 attack or +1 damage to X specific weapon type. So ultimately characters of the same class really don't distinguish themselves.

Men of War: Vietnam

Men of War: Vietnam is a new game for the critically acclaimed series. The new, story-driven campaign lets you taste the explosive mix of the jungle, Hueys and rock-n-roll in 1968. The US campaign focuses on a team of elite special ops soldiers, and each one of them has a personality. The unit includes Sergeant John Merrill, machinegunner Jim Walsh, sniper Sonny Armstrong, grenade launcher operator Carl Dillan and combat engineer Bill Kirby.

In some missions they can count only on themselves, while in the others they act together with regular US and South-Vietnamese troops. The North Vietnam campaign tells the story of two Soviet military consultants and two soldiers of the North Vietnam Army who are the only survivors of an ambush prepared by the US troops.

The task of getting back to the North Vietnam territory is a difficult one – they have no means of radio communication, no wheeled vehicles, and it’s too far to make it there on foot. On their way these survivors get involved in a chain of bloodbath engagements and find themselves in the dead center of the well-known Tet offensive. Missions range from special operations (rescuing a shot-down pilot, escorting a reporter, etc.) to full scale battles.
