L.A. Noire

L.A. Noire is a video game for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 developed by Team Bondi in conjunction with Rockstar Games and published by Rockstar Games. As the title suggests, the game draws heavily from both plot and aesthetic elements of film noir – stylistic films from the 1940s and 1950s that shared similar visual styles and themes including crime, sex and moral ambiguity and were often shot in black and white with harsh, low-key lighting.

The game uses a distinctive colouring-style in homage to the visual style of film noir, including the option to play the game in black-and-white. The post-war setting is the backdrop for plot elements that reference the detective films of the '40s (as well as James Ellroy's novel L.A. Confidential and the Curtis Hanson film based on it), such as corruption and drugs, with a jazz soundtrack.

L.A. Noire is also notable for using Lightsprint's real-time global illumination technology, as well as Depth Analysis's newly developed technology for the film and video game industries called MotionScan, where actors are recorded by 32 surrounding cameras to capture facial expressions from every angle.

GAMEPLAY

L.A. Noire takes place in 1947 Los Angeles, a city of glamour, fame, and wealth, but also where crime, vice, and corruption are rife. The player assumes the role of LAPD Police Officer and later Detective Cole Phelps. The game starts with Phelps as a uniformed patrolman, and follows his career as he advances through the police departments bureaus of Traffic, Homicide, Vice, and finally Arson. Each new desk gives the player a new partner who will help Phelps in his investigations.

The game blends investigative elements such as mystery and crime solving, with fast-paced action sequences, including on-foot and car chases, hand-to-hand combat, and gunfights. In addition to the storyline missions, the player can work on optional side-investigations following a call from dispatch, known as Street Crimes. The player can travel on foot, as well as in various cars that are unlocked as Phelps progresses through the police departments. The player also has a total of ten detective suits available; an initial six, plus another four downloadable ones. The suits are equipped with special abilities, such as increased damage protection and increased aim when firing a gun.

Unlike Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto series, the player cannot freely create chaos and kill civilians with weapons and cars, as the character is a police detective. Weapons are only allowed in appropriate circumstances and only when a player is working on a case where a weapon is warranted.

Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War 2 -- Retribution

The Dawn of War 2 series has long been a story about the Space Marines, but Retribution gives your choice of Space Marines, Tyrannids, Chaos, Orks, Eldar and the new guard. After you select an army, you play through 16 missions that are only vague enough that they are written for each work force. It is a clever way, which was a huge selection, but it also leads to a weaker story than the previous Dawn of War 2 games. None of the characters stand out as the previous entries in Space Marines, and retaliation lacks the same sense of attachment, at the time of the many, many hours I was with the campaigns of both the original Dawn of the first enlargement, Chaos Rising spent built.

Even if the story is not as compelling, the gameplay is as addictive as ever. Retribution, as the Dawn of War 2 franchise in general, is a unique real-time strategy game that forces players to focus more on things such as cover, unit facing and general site layout more than just production of an overwhelming force. And unlike so many other real-time strategy games, Retribution pushes physics into the mix, so that to control a wild chaotic, violent experience compared to the predictability of something like StarCraft. It is not crash for explosions crater in the ground and exploded enemies from the sky, knocking back your infantry rarity. All the while, your machine guns lay suppressing fire while you micromanage small forces to overcome the odds.

The best part of a campaign of several playable races is that you have a good reason to play things over and over again. Every army is playing just different enough that stadiums do not feel too repetitive and Warhammer nerds like me to play certainly appreciated the chance to be their favorite army. In this case it is the newly added Imperial Guard, which I love, who just specialize the right mix of squishy people and tough-ass armored vehicles Other armies in some areas such as ranged or melee, but the Imperial Guard have a bit more - if also of lower quality. It makes them somewhat less heroic, and easier to identify.

Like the previous Dawn of War games, Retribution is still much of its mileage from their role-playing aspects. After each mission you gain experience for heroes and units fitted Wargear. The result is a system, the player selection and tactics still further increased, so that you can customize your hero to your playing style and better understand your forces to the missions. For example, you could love a hero that compliments your ranged troops with buffs or a powerful weapon, or a heavy hitter that can absorb damage and rush into battle, inspiring people around them. It keeps the Hero units of interest, and serves as a reason to look forward to the briefing screen-between missions.

It's easy to think of revenge as an expansion, but it is much more than what I normally do with that moniker, as there is with Dawn of War 2 multiplayer comes. Although the multiplayer never something that I have is in super - Dawn of War 2 has always been on the campaign first and foremost for me - but it's still a fun distraction from the story. The online co-op mode called Last Stand, where players use hero characters wave after wave of enemies for experience and Wargear struggling, even fun, though certainly not the main reason to get revenge.

Ten Things That Work In Video Games, But Not Real Life

The rift between video games and reality is a large one, despite our best efforts to claim otherwise. But the differences are quite obvious once we look at how mechanically, video games are totally, foolishly outlandish. Like, maybe they were conceived by a kid with a severe case of the silly-brains, So this is a fairly in-depth study of big ways video games differ from reality. Some are physics-based, while others exemplify how we should avoid practical application of video game techniques at all costs. This is the list of ten things that happen in video games, but don't cut it in real life.

1. If You Collect Coins, You're Either A Nerd, Or You're Homeless ( example: Super Mario Series )
2. Eating Food Off The Ground Doesn't Make You Healthier ( example: Most 1980s and 1990s games )
3. Hiding In Shadows Doesn't Render You Invisible ( example: Splinter Cell Series )
4. Double Jumping Doesn't Really Work (e
xample: Super Smash Bros.)
5. Going In Water Doesn't Instantly Kill You ( e
xample: Red Dead Redemption )
6. Life Doesn't Let You Skip Through Boring Conversations ( e
xample: Mass Effect )
7. You Can't Carry 15 Guns And Still Walk Like A Normal Human Being ( e
xample: Most FPS )
8. Rocket Jumping Will Literally Kill You Instantly ( e
xample: Team Fortress )
9. Tilting Your Guitar Won't Make You Rock Harder ( e
xample: Guitar Hero )
10. Gunshot Wounds Don't Just Fade Away ( e
xample: Call of Duty: Black Ops )

6 Things We Know About the Nintendo 3DS

Earlier this morning, Nintendo of America (NOA) held a press conference in New York, where she announced the launch details of its upcoming 3D glasses-free hand-held system. NOA president Reggie Fils-Aime the stage and spoke about the various functions of the system and everything to expect what we see as we approach the Nintendo 3DS publication date. Let's take a look at the Start details:

1) Nintendo 3DS Launch Date is March 27th
2) Nintendo 3DS Price is $249
3) Comes With a Charging Dock, 2GB SD Card and Two AR Games
4) Friend Codes Are No More
5) Buy Classic Game Boy and Game Boy Color Games from the eShop
6) The 3DS Has a Built-in Motion Sensor

There’s still no confirmed launch lineup for North America. They did say that between the March 27th release and E3 2011 in early June we will see 30 games on 3DS. That’s a lot in a short amount of time. Hopefully Ocarina of Time and Street Fighter are somewhere on that list of planned releases.
